BRIDGES
CABLES, STEEL, AND SWEAT
A bridge under construction is one of the most photogenic things humans build. It's geometry doing real work: cables in tension, pylons climbing into nothing, a deck that doesn't yet reach the other side. We have photographed several of them, on foot and from every angle the site allowed, with the cooperation of the engineers and crews who put them there.
The frames in this gallery move between the architectural and the human. Cable arrays read like instruments. Pylons turn into compositions. Then a worker walks into the shot with a coffee and a hard hat and the whole thing snaps back into scale. That tension, between the abstract structure and the people holding it together, is what we came to photograph.
